English as a Second Language

Location - St. Paul, MN USA; drive through (I refuse to use -thru) at a Taco Bell “resteraunt”.
Order (exactly as I said it) - Number six with a softshell, Mountain Dew, empinada, and Fire sauce.
What I received - Number six with a hardshell, Mountain Dew, empinada, and mild sauce.

An important note is that I could not understand a word the guy said when he repeated back my order. This problem was a combination of the speaker in the drive through sign that sounded like it was buried six feet under the sand on a beach where the tide was coming in, and the fact that even once I heard him speak without the electronic transmission equipment adding it’s own accent to his, I still couldn’t understand him. It was almost the same in person, without the tide coming in, and the sand was gravel instead.

You might be speculating at this point where I am going to go with this. It’s this simple, if you are going to move to a country, and you plan on living there for some time, you should have the common sense to learn the native language.

The Return of Futurama

There is a great article at TVSquad discussing the comeback of Futurama.

I don’t know what happened to the show when it was originally on Fox, but I thought the show was excellent right from the first episode.

From the article:

Groening “loves” the fact that Futurama has landed on Comedy Central, because “we have a lot of leeway” there.

I can’t wait to see just how much leeway they are given. Futurama doesn’t push the boundaries as far as something like Family Guy does, but maybe they were holding back. I hope they have the freedom to do just about anything they want, especially since I’m sure they will be on [Adult Swim].

Now I have the first thing to look forward to in 2008!

Naval Disaster Avoided

While stumbling across the interweb, I ran across the story that is supposed to be the actual conversation between 2 Naval vessels. It goes something like this (in this instance, it was supposedly the Canadians and Americans, but that is not consistent):

Al Franken - no way!

So according to the article at the Star Tribune, Al Franken is going to run for Senator in Minnesota.

Wow… I can’t even begin to count the reasons that I would not vote for this guy. Many of the reasons are the same reasons that I would not vote for Rush Limbaugh. Mr. Franken is a political entertainment personality, not a politician. His political views are driven by what will give him the most exposure and make him the most money, not what is good for Minnesota and the people who live here.

I think it all started with Jesse Ventura. Mr. Franken must think we are easy pickings since we were stupid enough to elect a sports entertainer as Governor. I hope that Mr. Franken finds that Minnesotans have wisened up after that whole thing. I don’t think that we are as excited to elect another political screwball as we were pre-Ventura.

At least I hope that we have…

And Clint Eastwood has never ran here…
