What were they thinking

From CNN:

Mary Neubauer, spokeswoman for the Iowa Lottery, said hundreds of ticket buyers had played a set of numbers from the ABC drama “Lost,” which featured a character who won $156 million by playing a string of digits obtained from a patient in a mental institution: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42.

Why would you do this? Do people think that they were the only ones to think of this?

Here’s a tip, not only are you hoping to match all the numbers correctly, but also to pick numbers that no one else picks so you don’t have to split the winnings. I wouldn’t mind splitting that much money, as there is certainly enough to go around, but not by a factor of more than 100!
