It just occured to me, when Kari asked me why it took so long. The reason that it took that long is the fact that I do not use a WYSIWYG tool to edit my site. I hand code the entire thing. I have not yet found a decent HTML editor that produced human readable HTML.
You might say, “Tim, I can’t read the HTML on your site as it is!”. Keep in mind that I also don’t construct the entire page at once. My pages all have server side includes. What you see is what the server gives you after it’s done combining all the code. Each page on this site is now built of 4 different pieces of code. There is the page itself, a header, a footer, and a mid section. All combined this gives the effect of the ease of management that the frames gave me, with the more precise positioning that tables can give me. The biggest argument for me for use of frames was that I only had to code one page one time. For example, the left hand navigation. With a frame, I simply refer to the HTML for that page for the specific frame. When I need to change the navigation, I only need to touch one file. With tables alone, that is not possible, but it becomes possible with server side includes. I build 1 page by hand, the index (home) page for the site, and then chunk it up into pieces that I can later combine with server side includes into one complete page. This is why all the pages on this site are SHTML rather than HTML. This simply tells the server that there is work to be done on the page before it sends it to the requesting browser. It is at that time that a page becomes whole.
Pretty cool eh? And, no Microsoft products were used. vi is the best there is.
Major changes!!!
I finally decided to convert from frames to tables on the entire site. This will allow you to link to any page on the site without having to visit the boring front page first!
Enjoy!
As you can tell from the banner, I decided to make a graphic of my own. Hope you like it!
On the home front, things are still moving along well. The upstairs floor is in, and soon they will be building the second floor walls. It is really amazing the speed at which all this goes up.
Well, the house is coming along great. The foundation now exists in the hole. Things are moving along quickly, as the builder said they would. He told us that things in the beginning go really fast, and they go really slow at the end.
I would not be surprised if we have the framing done by the end of the month!
I have 2 volunteers so far, and I would like one more. Thanks to those who have volunteered so far!
